Isaac Solomon was born in New York City and later moved to Brooklyn, New York. His mother was an actress and his father a musician. As a child, he spent much of his time reading and writing. He graduated from the City College of New York in 1961 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature
He worked as a school teacher, but after experiencing what he called "the misery of teaching," he began to pursue a career in journalism. In 1970, Isaac Solomon received a Master's degree in Journalism from Fordham University.
